SIGNAL
Due to Covid-19, StudentHack 2020 was conducted online. The hackathon had a retro theme, with prizes for best video game and best retro hack.
I wasn’t well at the time but I still wanted to take part. I decided to work on my own so I could be flexible with when I worked and not let team members down. Since I anticipated I wouldn’t have enough time to learn something new, I played to my strengths and created a cyberpunk style puzzle/action game in Unity.
The finished game was… not exactly finished. I focused on building an expandable system that could be used to create levels easily but didn’t have time to create many of these levels. I explained this in my application and included a demonstration of the level system in my video.
I was surprised and honoured to be awarded both ‘Best Game Hack’ and ‘3rd Place Overall’. I really enjoyed taking part and the organisers at UniCS did a fantastic job of running everything smoothly despite the circumstances.
